A long-time Gainesville native and Gainesville High graduate, John worked as the President of Smith-Bell for nearly 40 years. Prior to his career in the petroleum industry, John attended Truett McConnell University before serving in the United States Marine Corps for two years.
Serving as the company’s visionary, he was responsible for the expansion into multiple states, offering retail sales, wholesale sales, and commission sales. Innovation and forward-thinking were key to John’s long-term industry-wide success, but he always put excellent customer service first. During his tenure with Smith-Bell, he introduced the unmanned commercial fueling station to north Georgia - just one example of the devotion to his craft and his industry.
John has been loyal to the Gainesville community, serving in various voluntary positions for Gainesville Junior College, Brenau University, Center Point Mentor Program, Gainesville High School Mentor Program, The Salvation Army, Chattahoochee Country Club, and the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce. While he passionately oversaw the 80+ year history of Smith-Bell, his daily actions also illustrated his dedication to professional, timely and friendly service, all of which are ingrained in Smith-Bell’s legacy.
Following his retirement in 2021, and because he is deeply rooted in family, John now spends his time hunting, farming, fishing, and being with his friends, family and grandchildren.

It’s often said that being treated like family is the ultimate sign of respect. Leslie learned firsthand from her father, John Nivens, about the importance of taking care of people. She has grown up in the Smith-Bell family, literally and figuratively, with a deep passion for the company’s tradition.
After receiving her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Georgia, she began her career in the petroleum industry. For six years she served as the Brand Coordinator for Smith-Bell before going to work at a local non-profit. In 2015, Leslie returned to Smith-Bell working alongside her father to gain insight and knowledge for one day helping to lead the family business. Leslie appreciates time spent with family and friends and enjoys volunteering in the community with several non-profit organizations and events.
